Ex-President Joe Biden embarks on a new chapter of his life post-presidency, visiting Santa Barbara, California, known for its wine production. He aims to enjoy leisure activities and explore the serene surroundings of this picturesque region.

Joe Biden's Retirement Journey Begins in Santa Barbara

After four months since former Mexican president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, left Palacio Nacional to settle at his estate called 'La Chingada' in Chiapas, now it's Joe Biden's turn, former president of the United States, who has completed his term. Like AMLO, Biden accompanied Donald Trump and his wife, Melania, on his last day in the White House before heading to the Capitol for Trump’s inauguration ceremony.

On his last day in the White House, Biden participated in a farewell event at Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland before traveling to California to begin his retirement. Biden decided not to seek reelection in July 2024, citing his intention to "make way for new generations." Since his departure, he has not publicly revealed the purpose of his trip to California.

Before departing, Biden and his wife welcomed Donald Trump and Melania at the White House, where they had tea before Trump’s inauguration. Both leaders proceeded to the Capitol for Trump’s swearing-in ceremony, held indoors due to the extreme cold in the U.S. that day.

Biden's trip to California takes him to Santa Barbara, a wine region in the central part of the state known for its pinot noir production. For Biden, this trip marks a significant break from his days as president towards an unplanned retirement. Santa Ynez, a town in the Santa Barbara wine region, offers a relaxed outdoor getaway, with notable wineries and a growing ambitious dining scene.

Long overshadowed by Napa and Sonoma, Santa Ynez has been increasingly attracting visitors seeking a more laid-back wine experience. About two hours north of Los Angeles, the area is notable for its accessibility and picturesque landscapes. The region has seen recent high-end openings, like the Inn at Mattei’s Tavern and an expanding food scene with innovative restaurants.

In Santa Barbara, Biden can enjoy outdoor activities such as bike tours along the scenic Valley Loop that connects the charming towns of the region. Additionally, he can treat himself to his favorite chocolate ice cream at Great Pacific Ice Cream on Stearns Wharf. Throughout his time in California, Biden is expected to indulge in some of his favorite hobbies and relax after decades dedicated to public service.
